Fashion brand tracking: one size fits none

In fashion, most buyers arrive with the decision still open.

Most fashion brand tracking starts from a standardized measurement framework. Our research suggests fashion should be measured differently.

31%

of fashion buyers knew which brand they wanted before they started looking. The rest decide once they’re shopping.

We surveyed 4,000 buyers across the US and UK, covering 18 everyday categories, to understand how brand decisions actually get made. In fashion, most buyers arrive with the decision still live, though a sizable minority already know their brand. Knowing your split between the two is where it starts.

Being liked isn’t the same as being chosen

Fashion buyers talk in brand love: two-thirds say the brand they chose feels like them. But that describes how a brand is held, not what wins a given purchase. Four in 10 (39%) would still have switched for a cheaper option, and only 58% say it’s a brand they often choose. Being liked and being in the running are different things, and only one of them turns into a sale.

This is where occasion matters. The same buyer wants different things for everyday casualwear, for an event, for kidswear, and a brand can be strong in one and invisible in another. We use occasion frameworks to map exactly that: where you’re the obvious choice, where you’re not considered at all, and where the room to grow actually sits.

Being liked and being chosen are different things.

The questions your fashion brand tracker should answer

We wouldn’t start by deciding what to measure. We’d start by understanding how your brand wins.

1

Where is the decision made, before the shop or during it?

About a third of buyers arrive already knowing their brand. The rest decide during the shopping itself. Those are two different markets, and your share in each sets your strategy: how much to spend building the brand in advance versus winning the choice in the moment.

2

What qualifies you, and what decides the sale?

Qualifiers get you considered: the sense that a brand is for someone like them, and that they trust it. Deciders get the sale over the line: great styles, quality, the things that win the specific purchase. They’re not the same lever, and a tracker that blurs them can’t tell you which one you’re losing on.

3

Which occasions are you winning?

Fashion isn’t one decision. Track where you’re the everyday choice, where you own the event, and where you’re nowhere, because that’s where the next growth comes from.

Those aren’t generic tracking questions. They’re fashion questions.

The brand tracking framework, built for your category

Fashion brand tracking built around how buyers decide

Most brand trackers start from a standardized framework. Kantar’s seven BrandDynamics measures, YouGov’s sixteen BrandIndex metrics, Tracksuit’s brand funnel. Those approaches buy consistency across categories by starting from a common framework and adapting it to each market.

ACT does the opposite. We don’t start with a standard questionnaire and adapt it to fashion. We start with fashion.

A

Actionable

Every metric earns its place by driving a decision. Separating qualifiers from deciders is actionable, because it tells you what gets you considered and what closes the sale. An affinity score that moved two points isn’t. If you can’t act on it, we don’t track it.

C

Customized

Built around how buyers here actually decide. That means sizing the before-the-shop and during-the-shop markets, mapping your strength by occasion, and separating what qualifies you from what wins the sale, rather than reporting a single score for how much people like you.

True

Organic Intelligence captures what people say when nobody’s asking. Here that’s what’s actually building or eroding your place on the shortlist, months before it reaches your sales.

The ACTion Brief

One direction this quarter, which here is usually a choice between widening the occasions you win and deepening the ones you own. Three plays underneath it. What to watch, what to do, what to skip. A decision document, not a dashboard.

That’s tracking you can ACT on.

Fashion brand tracking FAQ

Why doesn’t standard brand tracking work for fashion?

Standard trackers are focused on brand affinity, whether people like you, feel you’re for them, would name you as a favorite. In fashion that misses the point, because being liked and being chosen aren’t the same thing. Only about one in three buyers know their brand before they start looking, so most decisions are still open when someone arrives. A tracker built around standing tells you how you’re felt about, not whether you were actually in the running for a given purchase.

What drives brand loyalty in fashion?

Fashion loyalty is weaker than affinity scores suggest. Two-thirds of buyers say the brand they chose feels like them, but four in ten would have switched for a cheaper option, and most people buy across a repertoire of brands rather than sticking to one. Feeling that a brand is “for them” and trusting it are what get a brand considered. What actually wins the purchase is more concrete: the styles, the quality, the specific thing that fits the occasion.

How is brand tracking different for fashion?

Fashion is bought occasion by occasion, and the decision often isn’t settled until the buyer is shopping. That means tracking two things a standard funnel ignores: which occasions you win (everyday casualwear, eveningwear, kidswear, where you’re strong, weak, or invisible), and where the decision is actually made, before the shop or during it. Those are effectively two different markets, and your share in each shapes whether you invest in brand-building or in winning the moment.

What should a fashion brand tracker measure?

Three things. Where the decision is made, the split between buyers who arrive knowing their brand and those who decide while shopping. Your strength by occasion, so you can see where you own the moment and where there’s room to grow. And qualifiers versus deciders, keeping “is this brand for me and do I trust it” (what gets you considered) separate from styles and quality (what closes the sale), because they call for different investment.
